SCALE: Dynamic Spectrum Management for DSL---Going Beyond Iterative Water-Filling

Abstract:

The competition faced by the DSL broadband industry from other forms of high-speed access, such as cable and fiber to the home, is becoming an increasing threat. To remain in the game and further extend the life of their aging last-mile copper access network, telephone companies would love to push end-user bitrates to astronomic levels.

To this end, I will provide a detailed overview of SCALE: a practical scheme for dynamic spectrum management, that jointly optimizes the transmit power resources of all DSLs in an access network. This patent-pending protocol provides a significant performance improvement over the status quo; doing so with comparably low complexity. Most importantly, it is easily distributed through local per-modem measurement and limited information exchange with a spectrum management center. Such overhead can be managed, where SCALE degrades gracefully as this overhead is reduced to zero.
