An emerging topic in wireless communications considers cooperative strategies. In this presentation, the properties of three basic cooperative protocols in a 2-user communication system are observed under the influence of wireless fading. The effective data rates, energy consumption and packet delays are discussed for initially proposed protocols like Direct Link, 2-Hop and a strategy denoted as 'Broadcast-and-Forward'. An enhancement of these protocols involves a Maximum Ratio Combining mechanism and an approach to achieve a fair communication system concerning throughput and energy consumption.
