Carrier and interference in CDMA cellular radio networks

Abstract
The capacity of code division multiple access (CDMA) systems is interference limited. The present paper aims at determining the intra- and other-cell interference in CDMA cellular communication networks. Two sources of randomness are taken into account. Mobiles are assumed to be located according to a possibly inhomogeneous planar Poisson process. Furthermore, radio wave propagation is described by a distance dependend power law and multiplicative correlated log-normal shadowing. Each mobile has a list of active base stations which may be located at arbitrary, also random positions. By macroscopic diversity selection the base station with the least attenuated path is selected from this list for establishing a connection.
On the basis of this model we first determine all moments of the received power at a reference base station. This lays ground for calculating and splitting the cumulated power into intra-cell signal and other-cell interference power. It turns out that even under perfect power control the relative other-cell interference ranges between 50 and 200 percent for realistic parameter constellations.
